Stress Stress Selye’s (sale-yay) Concept of Stress A variety of experiences can cause stress. Defined as “the nonspecific response of the body to any demand made upon it.” Emphasizes how change can cause stress, i.e., can be positive or negative, new job or loss of job Does not address “stress” that is unchanging over time, like” Poverty Any –ism (racism, sexism, homophobism, etc.)

Measuring Stress Depends on how they interpret the event and what they can do about it Stressful situation = one that a person regards as threatening and possibly exceeding his or her resources. Divorce – More stressful for couple in their 40’s with 4 kids, than couple newly married and no children Britney Spears and Jason Alexander = easy divorce Britney Spears and Kevin Federline = difficult divorce

How Stress Affects Health Indirect/Direct Effects Indirect effects - Changes in behavior – loss of sleep, substance use, constant anxiety. Childhood trauma or abuse can lead to problems in adulthood, usually through drinking, risk-taking Direct effects - Stem from prolonged activation of the SNS, leads to prolonged exposure to cortisol, can damage memory and inhibit immune system functioning.
