Lecture 16 – Energy Balance October 8, 2008 Killers o Diabetes o Cardiovascular Disease o Both have a major contributor: body weight Energy Balance o Weight (or change in weight) Function of how much you eat and how much you expend o Energy Input Glucose and amino acids enter the cell and turn into pyruvate Pyruvate enters mitochondria and becomes acetyl CoA ATP is the energy our body uses, but we don’t eat much ATP How do we convert these forms of energy back and forth? o Energy expenditure Indirect Calorimetry Can estimate your energy expenditure Antoine lavoiseier o Took guinea pigs and put them in chambers o He put ice in the chamber, he measured the ice to find out how much heat was given off o The water melted from the ice was collected and measured o Measured oxygen going in and the carbon dioxide going out o Then he did the same thing with an inanimate object (candle or an alcohol) o Said there’s not much difference between life and nonlife
