Lecture 19 – Energy Balance cont. Gordon Kennedy o Changed the way we view eating o Hypothalmic Hyperphagia o Said that the hypothalamus is reading the body fat By lesioning this area you’re setting up the amount that’s going to be set Eating is a mechanism to get you to these other weight values Said that there are not feeding areas o Set Point o Contributions: No feeding or satiety centers in brain Body weight (or fat) is regulated Eating is the mechanism involved in regulating body weight Hypothalamus o The VMH inhibits the vagus (parasympathetic) o But when you destroy the VMH you disinhibit the vagus which produces hyperinsulinemia (activates insulin receptors everywhere) o Burn through glycogen quickly and you eat more LH induced eating o “Pleasure” Center same area that the food people were studying o Reward Center o When stimulated dopamine is released o Not behaviorally specific If you gave it a drinking tube it would drink when hypothalamus
