Lecture 36 – Nutraceuticals December 3, 2008 Neutraceuticals o White Willow Bark Contains Salicin Converted to acetyl-salicylic acid in liver Major anti-inflammatory effects Due to block of prostaglandin synthesis o Responsible for fevers o Swelling (asprin works to block this) o Feeling irritable when you get a cold o Asprin First produced by Bayer company in Germany Anticoagulant effect Came up with ibuprofen by rearranging molecules in asprin o Good for sports athletes, o Anti-inflammatory Acetaminophen (Tylenol) o Only relieves fever, not so good with anti-inflammatory o Xanthines Coffee Caffeine o Has been used with hyperactive children Very potent Central NS characteristics o Produces all the same types of cognitive changes o High doses will cause nausea o Some ppl have a paradoxical reaction to caffeine it makes them sleepy Tea Black tea not herbal Theophylline o Bronchial dilating agen o Operate on the sympathetic NS sensitize the sympathetic
