Medical Parisitology October 1, 2009 Lagochilascaris minor (hair lip ascaris) split lip o Bizarre worm o Rare worm in Caribbean Islands and central Brazil o Intermediate host involved o Probably lives in stomach o Unusual parasites of people because the worms reproduce in the tissues People can have lesions in neck (500 worms) that keep coming up People develop nodules or cysts People have sneezed them out of their noses o If you infect mice 1/12 will develop cysts Anisakis and Pseudoteranova o Sushi and sashimi worms o Tends to be a parasite of sea mammals (whales) o Adults live in stomach where they attach to stomach wall o 1-2 inches long o Live with their heads stuck in the stomach wall, then let go when food comes o Crustacean intermediate host first Then fish paratenic host o Sometimes they can perforate the stomach of humans, leading to medical emergency o Most typical is Pseudoteranova in the United States Try to migrate back out of humans People can have allergic reactions to eating dead worms o Most fish are infected
