HW #7 1. Women and men use different speech patterns in their everyday lives. When swearing, women use less vulgar cuss words or at least try to use less profanity than men. Threats are also more severe when men say them than when women say them. Along with that, women usually say a simple “hello” or other standard greeting, while men are less formal. These differences can be traced back to how women are constantly trying to be higher class and appear well-off. Just as in the past, women care much more about the opinions of other than men do, causing women to try to be much more formal. I believe these differences are decreasing as women are less concerned with being formal and appearing sophisticated. 2. Power and ideology is used in the speech of this clip. He uses lower class speech to display the man’s poor status and car choice. Cultural identities are used when the German man uses African American English to represent another race in a negative light. Language attitudes are used because it is viewed that a common
