A) Elements of visual design a. Costume, hairstyle, makeup i. Costumes- clothes and accessories b. Décor i. Set (studio-built, location, and computer generated)- the four walls ii. Set dressing- a part of the four walls ex portrait, sofa, lamp iii. Prop- part of the set that is used by the actors and enters into the plot 1. used in someway by the actor c. Photography- photos “light”, graphy “to write” d. Lighting (everyone looks better in soft lighting than natural lighting) i. Three-point lighting system 1. Key light- directed towards the principle subject from above to one  side a. Main source of illumination in a scene 2. Fill light- it is placed 90 degrees away (to the left or right) from key  light to fill in areas key light doesn’t get; softens harsh shadows 3. Back light (Rembrandt, the painter)- putting the light behind the  subject (most of the light), as a result the subject looks better,  separates subject from the setting, creates depth, halo effect. A  person looks most beautiful in back light ii. Direction of light- creates different psychological moods and meanings 1. Straight on- look terrible 2. From the floor- look ominous 3. From the side- create shapes (bone structure)

4. From the top down- spiritualize, innocent iii. Quantity of light- amount or degree of intensity of light in the frame 1. High key light- a lot of key and fill light; all the areas of the space  are going to be lit ex.  Singin in the Rain 2. Low key light- amount of key and fill light vary (a lot of one and  little of another); creates shadows in the frame. Ex  Mildred Pierce 3. Hard/harsh light- high illumination of a scene; reveal the
