A) Modes of Representation/Style a. Definition- the manner in which a particular work of art is conceived and executed and rendered, in which the rendering is placed into the meaning of the work i. Film can be objective or subjective in how it renders reality (even within the same film) b. Types- objective or subjective i. Objective – we see this as realist B) Realism a. Nature of the film medium and objective renderings i. Films act as a window to reality b. Realism as a method i. Matter of representation in which to create a one-to-one correspondence between the way things are and the way things are depicted (the medium they choose) ii. Comes from the mimetic tradition of art iii. Is realism reality? No, because there is always an element of subjectivity. The vision of reality has to go through the artist before being depicted and thus creates a bias iv. Quid quid riccipitoire in modoricipiates- whatever is received is received in the manner of one receiving v. No guarantee of truth c. Realism as an attitude of mind i. What is the artist’s philosophy? 1. They’re interested in relative truth; truth that can be verified in experience ii. They’re looking to explore psychological character dimensions 1. They will be very prone to tell you why iii. The artist will always see the individual as a member of society 1. Man and his relationship to society, individual institutions, etc. iv. Because the realist deals with the everyday, they will always find something wrong, not right, something hidden or out in the open with reality

v. Realist deals with the common man in everyday situations vi. Also deals with controversial and sensational issues (sex, violence, etc) vii. Like life, the endings may be ambiguous or bleak, sometimes optimistic (tempered but not pure optimism) viii.They privilege content- what is being said is important rather than how it is said ix. Give the audience something to think about x.
