Anusha Vadlamudi TA: Lindsay Aldridge Chem 262 L 401; Rm: 300 Experiment II: Purification of an Unknown by Recrystallization The unknown compound was weighed to be 494 mg. In a beaker, 10 mL of ethanol was boiled. The sample was then dissolved in ~4 mL of hot ethanol. Hot infiltration was used to remove any insoluble substances. A fluted filter paper was prepared and placed in a stem less funnel, which was placed atop another Erlenmeyer flask containing 2 mL boiled ethanol. The solution of compound and impurities was poured onto the filter paper and the solution was collected in the second flask. Suction filtration was used to isolate the solid component in the mixture. While continuing to heat the solution, ~ 5 mL water was added until the solution just became cloudy. The solution was cooled to room temperature until crystals were formed and then placed in an ice bath for ~ 5 minutes. The solution was them poured into a Hirsch funnel set up for suction filtration. About 1.5 mL cold water was used to rinse out the flask and 1.5 mL cold water
