Anusha Vadlamudi TA: Lindsay Aldridge Chem 262 L 401; Rm: 300 Experiment III: Nucleophilic Substitution: The Synthesis of 2-Methylphenoxyacetic Acid To a 5-mL round bottom flask, 1 mL water was added with a pipet and stirred. A pellet of NaOH was weighed quickly (to avoid the hygroscopic effects of NaOH). The pellet was found to be 0.167 g and added to the flask with the water. The amount of o- cresol and sodium chloroacetate needed was calculated using the weight/mL o-cresol and the molecular mass of sodium chloroacetate. O-cresol (1.20 mL) and sodium chloroacetate (0.487 g) were added to separate reaction tubes. When the NaOH pellet had dissolved, the o-cresol was added to the flask using a pipet and stirred for one minute. Then 1 mL water was added to the sodium chloroacetate to dissolve and the solution was transferred to the flask using a pipet. The distillation column was attached to the neck of the flask, which was heated in the Thermowell heater for 5 minutes on the stir plate.
