Anusha Vadlamudi TA: Lindsay Aldridge Chem 262 L 401; Rm: 300 Experiment IX: Column Chromatography: Separation of Nitroacetailides A stopcock was attached to a luer tip (with chromatography disk inside), making certain that the stopcock was closed. A chromatography column was attached to the luer tip. The column was filled halfway with a 2:1 solution of hexanes:ethyl acetate. A beaker was placed under the column so that liquid could be collected as it moved through the column. To the column, 4.065 g of white alumina powder was added slowly, while tapping to ensure proper packing. A small amount of sand was added to the chromatography column. About 10 mL of solvent was eluted until the solvent level was just below the top of the sand layer. Solvent was added almost to the top of the column. A 100 mg sample of the compound made in Experiment 8 was dissolved in .4 mL of dichloromethane. The solution was applied to the top of the sand layer and the stopcock was opened to allow the sample to flow onto the column.
