Theatre 101 Worksheet 1 general terms/concepts I. Art: makes order out of chaos; man-made, therefore “artificial”. Fine Art: art made for entertainment, culture; brings us pleasure, sharpens our perception of life. All art requires knowledge, study and expertise of technique. Does it? ex: Theatre, Ballet, Painting, Sculpture, Music, Poetry, Literature etc. Practical Art (useful art): art that is created for a specific use, it is “practical” ex: Interior design, architecture, fashion design, furniture making. But, are they art? II. Theatre: the seeing place, and/or the body of work for performance Drama = characters in action 3 elements of Theatre: actor, script, audience 3 conflicts of man ( provide an example of each, you may use movies): man vs. man - man vs. nature - man vs. self - III. Popular Theatre: produced for the masses, entertains, commercial theatre, for a profit, (most musicals) Elitist Theatre: educates and entertains, non-profit, (Shakespeare) Educational Theatre: in a college setting, offers training in all aspects of theatre
