It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought - that is, a thought diverging from the principles of Ingsoc - should be literally unthinkable…” p. 410 If language naturally determines how we view the world, then if we want to create a world, we should create a language. Newspeak “…to give exact and very subtle expression to every meaning that a party member could properly wish to express, while excluding all other meanings and also the possibility of arriving at them by indirect methods…designed not to extend but to diminish the range of thought, and this purpose was indirectly assisted by cutting the choice of words down to a minimum.” -from Collected works of George Orwell. Grammar of Newspeak Vocabulary A: words for everyday activities with “all ambiguities and shades of meaning purged.” “to express only simple purposive thoughts, usually involving objects or physical actions.” No distinction between N & V, e.g., think Adjective formation: add -ful to N/V, e.g. thinkful All rules are completely regular, I.e., no exceptions Grammar of Newspeak Vocabulary B: words for political purposes (“impose a desirable mental attitude upon the person using them.”… “a verbal shorthand”) All compounds; goodthink = orthodoxy or think in an orthodox manner; joycamp = forced labor camp Goal is duckspeak = def “to make articulate speech issue from the larynx without involving the higher brain functions at all.” Vocabulary C: scientiFc and technical terms organized as lists which spets in speciFc Felds would use but which were not applicable outside their concrete applications in speciFc Felds. Orwell “If you simplify your English, you are freed from the worst follies of orthodoxy. You cannot speak any of the necessary dialects, and when you make a stupid remark its stupidity will be obvious, even to yourself… Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind. ” p. 366 “… political speech and writing are largely the defense of the indefensible… the great enemy of clear language is insincerity.
