Literature Final Review 1.  Modernism and Luigi Pirandello: Luigi Pirandello was born in 1867 into an upper class family in the village  of Kaos, a poor area of a town in southern Sicily. His parents came from a high  standing background that actively participated for the unification and democracy  of Italy.  Pirandello received elementary education at home, but was more  fascinated by fables and legends that his servant used to tell him.  His family  moved to Palermo where he finished his high school education and began  reading and writing his first poems.  He moved to Rome to continue studying  letters, where he encounters in the city a struggle for unification.  He later  transferred to the University of Bonn, in Germany where he got to meet German  romantics literature. He was involved in a fixed marriage with Antonietta Portullano in 1894.  She was described as violent, depressed and crazy.  He lived with her for  approximately 17 years and had 3 children with her.  The mother brought great  damages to the family and from her he got inspiration for a lot of his works.  In  his works, he presented sarcastic and tragic view of life where madness breaks  this.  Also, they were based on Sicilian backgrounds and people.   Pirandello started a new type of Italian literature, full of realism and
