The Crusades Background o Byzantine Empire – shaky ground, Muslim keep attacking on their borders o Seljuk Turks – recently converted to Islam Battle of Manzikert (1071) – Byzantines defeated o Alexius I Comnenus (1081-1108) – calls to the pope for help and says he will go under his leadership o Pope Urban II (1088-1099) – wants to extend his leadership, and to re-extend Christianity to its furthest extent, gather as many men Council at Clermont (1095) – makes a speech and asks people to join in the fight against the “demonic” Muslims Just War/Justified War – can a pope really start a war? 1. Self Defense for other Christians who can no longer defend themselves 2. Right Intentions (not for material gain) 3. Called by the Pope 4.
