CHEM 117 Experiment #9 The data treatment for Experiment #9 is a bit more complicated than that for most of your reports. And this semester the schedule worked out so that you’ve done the experiment before any of the CHEM 107 lecture sections have gotten to kinetics. So I’m going to try to give you some guidance here to help you get through the reports. Everything that is in here is also in Chapter 11 of your CHEM 117 textbook, so you can look there if you want a more formal version. Here I am going to try to just walk you through what you need to do. I’ll start with some general ideas about kinetics. 1. Rates The rate of a reaction measures how fast the reaction proceeds. We usually write the rate in terms of the change of concentration of a reactant or product. For the reaction in the experiment, you are monitoring the concentration of the crystal violet. (That is easy to measure because of the purple color.) So for the reaction CV + + OH CVOH we can write Rate = – Δ [CV + ] Δ t Here [CV + ] is the molarity of the crystal violet and t is time. The minus sign is in there so that the rate will be positive: because the CV + is a reactant, its concentration will be going down. 2. Rate laws The rate law for a reaction is an equation that tells us how the rate will change with the concentration of the reactants. For our reaction, we expect the rate law to be of the form: Rate = k [CV + ] m [OH ] n , where
