P RACTICE P ROBLEMS FOR T EST 2 P ROBLEM 1: a) Sketch the electric field and scalar potential contours for i) a monopole and ii) a dipole. b) Sketch the how a uniform electric field is perturbed by the presence of i. a conducting slab ii. a conducting sphere iii. a dielectric slab, having a relative permittivity of 3.0 iv. a series of dielectric slabs with relative permittivity of 3.0, 2.0, 5.0 P ROBLEM 2: Consider two spherical conductors with radii r 1 and r 2 (r 2 >r 1 ), which are connected by a conducting wire. The distance of separation between the conductors is assumed to be very large compared with r 2 , so that the charges on the spherical conductors may be considered as uniformly distributed. A total charge Q is deposited on the spheres. Find, a) The charges on the two spheres, and b) The magnitude of the electric fields at sphere surfaces. PROBLEM 3: Consider two parallel conductors, each of radius b, and separated by a distance d. You may assume that the conductors are infinitely long and have a charge density ρ s C.m -2 that is uniformly distributed along their length and around their peripheries. Calculate the capacitance per unit length under the assumption that d >> b.
