Chapter IV America becomes very attracted to Italy because of its location in Europe and wanted to use it to slow the spread of Communism. America plays a large part in Italy's political and cultural evolution; strong role in domestic affairs. Why? -The Cold War - The presence of a very big Communist Party How? - Italy and America partnered on the policy and working level to prevent other attacks after 9/11/01 - Italy aided in rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 - 2001- Berlusconi allies with Bush (missile defense, Euro-federalism, climate change) --> Agreement because of Italian tourists to America and American's studying abroad and traveling to Italy, Italian-Americans · Was Italy a partner or dependant ally of the U.S.? Why? - U.S interferes because it was concerned about the Communist party taking over (up until 1991) · The American government/and AFL/CIO (CIA?) supported the creation of two labor unions (UIL & CISL) and of a political party: the Socialist Democratic Party (PSDI). Why? -->America further strengthened immobilismo · Throughout the 1950's, Italy was on it's way to becoming a lost ally. Why? - Italy didn't fight hard against communism and America threatened to stop giving aid ·American bitter aversion to Italy's (Enrico Mattei) creation of The Italian state oil & gas agency, known as ENI, and economic development of underdeveloped countries. Impact? -President Giovanni Gronchi's protest to America.
