Chemistry 2510 Introductory Experimental Organic Chemistry Spring 2010 Some Important Notes about Laboratory Safety 1. Safety glasses are essential and must be worn at all times in the laboratory. If you already wear prescription lenses, be certain that they are constructed of glass or plastic that will not shatter. You should wear goggles on top of your glasses to provide additional protection. When in the laboratory you must have on eye protection. This rule will be strictly enforced. Violators of this rule will be asked to leave and will lose credit for that experiment. 2. A laboratory coat or apron is required. No bare feet and no open-toed shoes or sandals. Appropriate clothing is recommended. 3. Never work alone in the laboratory. 4. Develop good habits. Do not touch yourself (or others!). Be aware that you should not touch your face, scratch your nose, wipe your eye, etc. when in the laboratory unless you thoroughly wash your hands first. Gloves will be available. Clean glassware immediately after use. Do not store dirty glassware in the locker. Keep your laboratory bench clean and tidy as well as the common areas of the lab. Be neat. When you have finished for the afternoon be sure to wipe down and clean up your work area and lower your hood sash. Wash your hands before leaving the laboratory. 5. Know the location of the safety showers, the eyewashes, drench hoses, the spill control centers, and the fire extinguishers. 6. Deposit all broken glass into the properly labeled containers - do not place broken glass in the trash cans. 7. Organic compounds are all poisonous in great enough quantities, so use caution. Many organic materials are also flammable, exercise caution. You should note the hazards of the materials that you will be using in your lab notebook prior to the laboratory period.
