GE 208K---[PHY 303K] Chapter 2: Motion along a Straight Line Prepared By: Fady Morcos Chapter 2: Motion along a Straight Line Mechanics: Is the branch of physics that studies the motion of bodies. o Kinematics s Deals with the mathematical description of motion in terms of position, velocity and acceleration. o Dynamics s Deals with force as the cause of changes in motion. In the next nine chapters we will be concerned with translational motion. o Assuming point mass, we ignore shape and orientation of the particle under study. o More complicated models, dealing with rigid bodies that might rotate while translating, will be discussed later in the class. 2.1 Average Speed taken time travelled distance Total speed Average = o Motion and speed are given relative to a reference point. s Absolute speed is given relative to Earth’s surface. s Relative speed is given relative to a moving frame (e.g. a chaser) 2.2 Average Velocity for Motion along a Straight Line For motion along x-axis: o t x -t t -x x v = = 1 2 1 2 : speed Average s Units = ? o
