Soc 162 Spring 2010 Projects explanation sheet For these two take home projects, you will have to use datasets to answer a question You can use any dataset (The list is not exhaustive), but at least 3 for each project Project 1 (due February 23) You will be randomly assigned a country Assignment: - Choose 6 indicators of primary health care (for example : vaccine rates, contraception use, access to clean water, chronic disease rate) and write a paragraph defending why you chose those as indicators of primary health care. - Choose at least 3 datasets (see list) and explain your choice in a few sentences. Why are you using those datasets? - Using materials found in those datasets, write a 3 to 4 pages report on the following subject: The UN is coming to determine how well your country’s primary health care system is performing, given the indicators you have chosen.” (HINTS : What are strengths and weaknesses in your country’s primary health care system? How have the numbers changed in the last, 5, 10, 15 and 20 years? Why do you think it is the case? How does your country compare to others in the region? Compare to other countries in the region who are economically the same, worse off or better off than your country. You must include your own analysis which is the most important part of your work) Project 2 (due April 14) You will be randomly assigned a country and a topic You have to look at retrospective, current and prospective data of your choice on the topic assigned, and write a description (3 to 4 pages) of the issue. Tell us why it is problem, what is being done, what the implications of the data trends are, what the prospective data shows, and speculate what could interfere and make the data worse or better in the future. You must start by writing 2 or 3 sentences explaining your choice of data sets (at least 3) 1

Data sets UNdata http://data.un.org/ The UN data portal is very useful because you can search and have access to numerous UN databases (22 databases, and 60 million records). Search by key word on many subject: energy, population, trade, refugees, human development, health… Many of the databases listed in this document are accessible from this portal UNSD (United Nations Statistics Division) http://unstats.un.org/unsd/default.htm Access to several databases including millennium indicators. For the common database, user are redirected to the UNdata portal.
