Overview THRESHOLD DATES • Why does this period begin at 1750 C.E.? ▫ World now completely integrated  Colonization / imperialism / revolution  Industrialization: shifts colonization to imperialism (dominance) • Why does this period end at 1914 C.E.? ▫ The concrete reason: World War I begins  Focus of global struggle of problematic imperialism  Change with how the world interacts with one another  New kinds of state systems develop  Decline of empire (and industrialization, in some cases)  Cold War is part of that ▫ Some historians would argue that this threshold date is a false one…that economic/industrialization issues should determine the threshold date; if that’s the case, then things wouldn’t “break” here in 1914 (it would be either before or after ) IMPORTANCE OF MAPS • Make sure that you can identify and refer to the geographic regions of the world. • Make sure that you understand what the following terms mean: ▫ Afroeurasia ▫ Eurasia ▫ Americas • Make sure that you can identify major oceans, seas, and rivers. • Make sure that you can identify the major areas, empires, city-states, cities, etc., that we have covered so far (Units 1, 2, 3, and 4).
