Suspension— mechanism where small particles are sifted through an organism’s mouth to leave the food only; usually in aquatic animals like sponges b. Substrate— mechanism where organism lives in or on their food source; eating their way through the food. They eat whatever is in their way as they are in food source, like earthworms. c. Fluid— suck nutrient-rich fluids from a living host; like a vampire. Examples are mosquitoes and leaches and these animals are usually called parasites. Bees are fluid-feeders but are helpful. d. Bulk— mechanism where organism eats large amount of food; they do this by having adaptations like claws and teeth. 2. Complete the diagram below concerning animal homeostasis and blood sugar regulation.

Adeesh Jain Pace Period 1 02/4/10 3. How do hormones regulate appetite in humans? Hormones, such as leptin produced by adipose cells, signal the brain. For example, then leptin values high, it signals the brain to stop eating and to do more physical activity. If leptin values are low, it signals the brain to eat more. This way, the weight of an individual is usually maintained at the same point. In summary, hormones regulate appetite be signaling the brain. 4. Contrast the terms undernourished, overnourished and malnourished? Undernourished is when a person or animal has a deficiency of calories; or basically they don’t eat enough. Overnourished, whereas, occurs from excessive food intake; in other words eating too much and becoming obese. In contrast, malnourishment is when an animal is missing an essential nutrient; essentially meaning the intake of junk foods and not healthy ones. 5. What are essential amino acids and essential fatty acids? Essential amino acids are amino acids which an animal cannot synthesize; instead it must obtain it from another food source such as vegetables or fruits.
