Agnieszka Wynar 1 Agnieszka Wynar Mrs. Mancini AP Literature and Composition 5 October 2008 Antigone Questions 3. The chorus evokes Dionysus several times through the play. Why should chorus call upon Dionysus? Dionysus is the God of fertility and wine. The chorus evokes his presence because the people of Thebes are suffering once again. In line 123 the pain is shown. Dionysus as the god of fertility and wine can help them overcome their state of depression and lack of fertility, therfore the Chorus turns to him for help. In lines 170-172 the chorus calls upon Dionysus to lead the way away from depression with a dance. He calls upon him also because of wine. Wine is an alcoholic drink that when drank gives one the feeling of numbness. The people of Thebes are in so much pain that they rather be resistant to it, even when it means to be drunk and lead an aimless life. It is better than facing the unbelievable pain they are sentenced to endure.
