Agnieszka Wynar 1 Agnieszka Wynar Mrs. Mancini AP Literature and Composition 22 September 2008 First assignment in preparation for Antigone Assignment: Read and annotate Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience” and Ghandi’s excerpt from, “On Civil Disobedience.” Thoreau asked most of the questions that follow in his essay. Others come from the textbook. Answer them in preparation for discussion on Tuesday. a. Summarize the purpose and meaning of Thoreau’s essay. How convincing do you find his argument? The purpose of Thoreau’s essay is clear; he is telling the people to have their own perspective on issues and not follow the government’s views when one does not agree with them. In other words, is to call attention to an unjust law, and ultimately change it. b. One of the most famous quotes often mistakenly attributed to Thomas Jefferson or Thomas Paine actually came form Thoreau’s essay. It reads, “That government is best which governs least.” What type of figurative language can be assigned to this quote and what is its meaning? The figurative language assigned can be; an aphorism. It is a terse formulation of a truth or sentiment. Thoreau was paraphrasing the motto of The United States Magazine and Democratic Review : “The best government is that which governs least.” Meaning behind statement can be viewed differently.
