Agnieszka Wynar 1 Agnieszka Wynar Mrs. Mancini AP Literature and Composition September 04, 2008 ASSIGNMENT 1: Essay The novel A Prayer for Owen Meany is a story of faith. Its main theme is a debate of faith and doubt. To give better explanation of faith the author uses Biblical allusions. In the beginning John states that Owen is the reason for his faith. Through the book he tells the story of how he came to believe. Owen claims that if God was something we could see there would be no such thing as fate; John however, struggles to believe Owen’s theory. In the book John; the narrator, shows his struggle to becoming a believer and Owen’s miracles that lead him up to becoming a real Christian. The novel is very detailed and filled with symbolism, and religious allusions; direct and more subtle ones; however, the moral is very simple. From the beginning of the novel, John describes Owen as otherworldly. While Owen was standing in a beam of light John even went so far as to say that, “He looked like a descending angel -- a tiny but fiery god sent to adjudicate the errors of our ways.” As the story goes on Irving slowly, subtly begins to link Owen to Jesus. In the second chapter of the book John says how he now thinks of Owen constantly, but mostly during the Sunday services. One day in church they were reading words of St.Paul, and he gives the direct reference to the Bible: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, And before you were born
