Agnieszka Wynar Mrs. Mancini AP Literature and Composition 6 February 2009 “When I Heard The Learn’d Astronomer” 1. The speaker of this poem is a young naïve person who has not yet discovered the deeper meaning and the beauty of what’s beyond earth; the sky. 2. The speaker of Walt Whitman’s “When I Heard The Learn’d Astronomer” is talking to not only the reader but is also communicating with his thoughts and reflecting back on his experience. 3. "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" is a lyric poem with a single stanza of eight lines. Walt Whitman wrote the poem in 1865. The version of the poem on this page is from the 1881-1882 edition of Leaves of Grass . 4. In Walt Whitman’s “When I Heard The Learn’d Astronomer” the speaker expresses his journey to discovering the sky. After speaking with the astronomer he was inspired to find the tranquility of the sky and the stars. He changes his view on astronomy and becomes interested in its purpose. It shows that a person must sometimes separate himself from the crowd to experience life and the cosmos from a different perspective.
