The people of Thebes say that Oedipus “cannot equal to gods” but have a high opinion of him because he concurred the monster that has been hunting the city of Thebes for a long time; the Sphinx. They compare him to a god like person; closer to being a god than any other of the citizens. They admire him because he has led them to prosperity and well being for a long time. 6. SIMILE – a figure of speech that compares two things that are basically unlike yet have something in common, and to compare it uses like or as. Simile found on pg 270 is “Thebes like a great army dying” This simile portrays that gods are killing something powerful and beautiful. It enhances the agony of the people. When a great army falls it brings much pain to its members, less than when an army that always falls dies. It brings a question to mind; why put a plague on a great city like Thebes? 13. PARADOX
