Foster I ntroduction: How'd He Do That? How do memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature? How does the recognition of patterns make it easier to read complicated literature? Discuss a time when your appreciation of a literary work was enhanced by understanding symbol or pattern. The memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature greatly. It matters because it is necessary for the reader to remember old stories in order to learn from them and deepen their knowledge. Symbols are a very important aspect as well; they deepen the meaning of the literature. If the reader recognizes them he can become a better at understanding what he reads. Patterns of stories are also important because similar patterns repeat constantly through literature and while observing those one can learn many new things. My appreciation of literary works began when reading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown which is overloaded with symbolism and allusions to religious theories and events. It has amused me because his depth of knowledge and imagination of the ancient religious world was quite impressive. I enjoyed the story deeply because I had a lot of similar knowledge from my church studies and history classes. Memory of text helps one enjoys the later literary works he reads because one is able to compare, contrast and relate to the information he possesses. Chapter 1 -- Every T rip Is a Quest (Except When I t's Not)- List the five aspects of the QUEST and then apply them to something you have read (or viewed) in the form used on pages 3-5. 1. Our quester : Robert Langdon 2. A place to go: The tomb of Mary Magdalene 3. A stated reason to go there: Find the holy grail 4. Challenges and trails: The trail to find the grail was very challenging because the clues to get there were very complicated and the two questers were the ones able to break them, but that doesnt mean it was easy for them. A religious group; the Illuminati was t rying to stop their every move which they finally failed to do. 5. The real reason to go: Jacques Saunire gave his granddaughter clues to find her family history which led through challenging trails and danger from religious groups. Chapter 5 --Now, Where Have I Seen Her Before?- Define intertextuality. Discuss three examples that have helped you in reading specific works....
