Telcom 2110 Network Design Homework #1 Spring 2010 1. Describe a network design project that can be classified as : (a) wired access incremental design, (b) MAN wired greenfield design a) An incremental design aims to expand the existing network, upgrade technology, or improve performance of the system. The incremental expansion design needs to consider an interoperability problem with the existing system, and the effect of upgrading on network performance. An example of wired access incremental design is a cable operator (e.g., Comcast) expanding its cable network to provide broadband service in rural areas, or upgrading some of its coaxial cable lines with optical fibers to support higher data rate. b) A Greenfield network design is a design that considers building a network from scratch. In the Greenfield design, a network must be carefully planned to satisfy the current and future requirements. The network should be upgraded easily at reasonable cost. An example of a MAN Greenfield network design is a startup backbone network for a bank to interconnect branches in the same city. 2.
