5 Notes #2 TELENET 2121: Network Management The History of Network Management Protocols Around 1988 developments of several network manager protocols was underway These efforts where conducted by the Internet Activities Board (IAB) High-level Entity Management System (HEMS) Simple Gateway Monitoring Protocol (SGMP) Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP) RFC 1052 states the conclusions of the IAB about the future of each of these protocols As a short-term solution, the IAB recommended the immediate implementation of SNMP For the long term, the IAB recommended that the Internet community explore CMIP as a basis for a network management protocol to satisfy future requirements CMIP is non protocol specific – CMOT is CMIP over TCP/IP
