Debate: ARE ENTREPRENEURS BORN OR MADE? Does it take some special combination of traits to be an entrepreneur? “Entrepreneurs work with such single-minded intensity because they are psychologically compelled to! Harry Levinson Where does this intensity come from? The Entrepreneur as Oedipus? Levinson Freud: The male is driven by unresolved rivalry with his father. He unconsciously strives to defeat him, escape his control and claim his mother’s praise! Do all entrepreneurs want to kill their fathers to make mommy happy? Not really but …. Entrepreneurs cannot tolerate authority i.e. father figures! THE STRIVING FOR AUTONOMY, INDEPENDENCE AND SELF-RELIANCE!!! Conclusion: The primary indicator of entrepreneurial drive is ….. The Entrepreneur as Oedipus? Levinson AND SELF RELIANCE!!! What psychologists call … INTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL What about women? Not driven by the same level of intensity as men; women don’t need a business to have a baby!? Levinson again! Better reasons: Diane Cole, wrote the article – Lack of role models; new to entrepreneurship (1989) – Lack of capital – Face discrimination (bankers)
