Minoan peaceful, no war paintings or thick walls. Made them vulnerable to attack. Mycenaean civ had many small states, 1400 – 1230 b.c.e Fighting amongst selves led to destruction 1100 – 800 bce dark ages after Mycenaean and before Hellenic. After 800 bce town life revives, with writing in Phoenician script. Settled into colonies and urbanized. Homer lived during 8 th century BC. Greek ideal of arête (excellence) demonstrated in his works. Also find beginning of greek humanism (concern with man and achievements). His works set foundation for Olympian religion 750 – 323 bce many city-states. 5 th century BCE polis (city-state) emph power of citizens, not gods (but had originally been based in religion).
