Numinous: awareness of an object, nonrational or suprarational apprehension of something that is “out there.” From Latin numen meaning “divine will, power, presence” Evidentialism: important beliefs, such as belief in God, should be based on evidence. If evidence balances out, you suspend judgment. Foundationalism: belief that any proposition is accepted as true either because some other proposition or because it can be accepted immediately. Religious experience is a direct, immediate, personal confrontation with the divine. Three kinds: revealed religion (humans on receiving end), sense of a universal presence, ad mysticism. Otto says that though reason is an important contribution to religion, a “feeling” about religion is also important, the same way that a “feeling” for a musical composition is important. He does not mean a subjective feeling about an object, but rather an awareness of it. This subjective feeling provides a basis for almost all religions. The apostle Paul said one needs more than careful analysis of doctrine to gain knowledge of God, and people need to have a religious experience. Buber said that it makes no sense to seek god because he is in everything, and to seek him is futile and will cause the seeker to miss him. The realm of the “it” is the realm of space and causality. God as I transcends this world and exists in a spiritual world. There are two kinds of relationships: i/it relationships where the I has a relationship with something of this world and i/thou relationships where the I has a relationship with something other worldly. Neither Buber nor Otto argue for anything, they just describe experiences.
