Bruce 473 pg. 1 Dr. Leslie Bruce Office: THH 402L; (213) 821-5563 Course: English 473 (32747R) Office Hours: MWF 12-12:50; THH 119 Email: lesliebr@usc.edu ENGLISH 473: Literature and Society—Children’s Fiction of the “Golden Age” Fall 2009 Syllabus Course Description What can portraits of childhood and children in fiction tell us about a society's values? Just how much reality is acceptable in children’s fiction? Are children harmed by fantasy novels, or are their imaginations exercised by them? In this class, we’ll begin considering these and related questions by reading from Mary Sherwood’s The History of the Fairchild Family (1818), an enormously popular text that combines violent imagery, prayers, and hymns to educate middle-class, Christian children. We’ll then move into what scholars have called the "Golden Age" of children's literature (roughly 1850-1910), exploring the ways in which fictions such as Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (1911), the anonymously penned Sweeney Todd (1847-1849), and George MacDonald’s The Princess and the Goblin (1872) entertain, socialize, and indoctrinate children using various degrees of realism and fantasy. We’ll finish the semester by comparing our Victorian texts to The Northern Lights (1995), Philip Pullman’s Carnegie award-winning novel that has generated calls for boycotts in the U.S., and which was censored as it was made into an American film ( The Golden Compass ). To expand our understanding of this literary period and the place of fiction for children in it, you will write a creative assignment (e.g., a narrative sequel, a fictional diary entry, or missing scene script), a review of a film adaptation of one of our texts, and an analysis of one of our novels. Objectives: By the end of the semester, you should be able to o Analyze literary texts using a variety of critical tools o Articulate your interpretations of our texts in cogent essays, reviews, and creative texts that demonstrate your understanding of a text’s themes, characters, and context o Characterize the conventions of literary genres and themes prevalent in this literature o Relate the major texts and authors of these literary periods to their historical contexts o Describe the diversity of this literature’s cultural contexts Required Texts (available at the Trojan Bookstore) o Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (1911) o Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland (1865) o Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows (1908) o Michael Patrick Hearn’s (ed.) The Victorian Fairy Tale Book (fairy tales) o Geroge MacDonald’s The Princess and the Goblin (1872) o Philip Pullman’s The Northern Lights (1995) o Hesba Stretton’s Jessica’s First Prayer (1867) o Access to online texts. We will be acquiring many of our shorter fictions online. You will find a listing of sites at which to access our shorter readings on page thirteen of this syllabus. o
