Prasad Failure analysis on a hydraulic cylinder piston For our group project, we decided on doing a failure analysis on a hydraulic cylinder piston. For this analysis we chose 6 different metals. To calculate the failure, first we found the pressure on the cylinder head due to the fluid. Then, we found the maximum alternating forces that could be subjected on the cylinder head and the piston rod. Lastly found what the fatigue limits would be for high loads. For medium cycles, 1000 -1,000,000 we used equation : where N is the number of cycles to failure. This yields us fatigue strength, from this 2 other equations are needed for the constants a and b : Because of these 2 equations it is now necessary to calculate S e , or endurance strength, this is done with the use of Marin factors. The Marin factors are used to identify the properties such as, surface condition, size, loading, temperature etc. This helps us to adjust the endurance limit to a
