(2008), Chapter 5: “Hovercraft Motion and Control.” Problems: 1. Consider the hovercraft with plan (top) view as shown. The hovercraft can be considered to be massless except for the three items with locations given in the table below. (a) Please find the x and y coordinates of the hovercraft center of gravity. (b) Please find the moment of inertia about the center of gravity. SOLUTION: (a) 800 ( 1 – x ) + 300 ( -5 – x ) + 250 ( 7 – x ) = 0 therefore x = 0.778 cm 800 ( 6 – y ) + 300 ( -8 – y ) + 250 ( -3 – y ) = 0 therefore y = 1.22 cm (b) Distance of masses from center of gravity comes from R 2 = x 2 + y 2 : R 1 = [ ( 1 cm – 0.778 cm ) 2 + ( 6 cm – 1.22 cm ) 2 ] 0.5 = 4.79 cm R 2 = [ ( -5 cm – 0.778 cm ) 2 + ( -8 cm – 1.22 cm ) 2 ] 0.5 = 10.9 cm R 3 = [ ( 7 cm – 0.778 cm ) 2 + ( -3 cm – 1.22 cm ) 2 ] 0.5 = 7.52 cm
