2 SG EECE 201, Module 2, Set 1 Logic Circuits Logic circuits are used to build digital computers as well as many other types of products. Logic circuits are nowadays mainly implemented as electronic circuits. Logic circuits perform operation on digital signals A common type of digital signals is binary logic signals where there are only two signal values, “0” and “1”. Since signal values are represented by a digit, such logic circuits are referred to as digital circuits.
3 SG EECE 201, Module 2, Set 1 Logic Circuits Until the 1960s logic circuits were constructed with bulky components. Even after the invention of transistors, the transistors and other circuit components such as resistors came as individual parts. The advent of integrated circuits made it possible to place a number of transistors and other circuit elements and thus an entire circuit on a single chip. In the beginning these integrated circuits had only a few transistors but as technology improved the number of transistors also increased.

5 SG EECE 201, Module 2, Set 1 What is on an Integrated Circuit? Conducting layers • There are many interconnect layers • Interconnect wires have electrical properties – e.g., resistance and capacitance • Insulators and contacts between layers Transistors • There are a few kinds of transistors. • In this class we will briefly talk about MOS (metal-oxide- semiconductor) transistors and circuits. • MOS transistors can be thought of as a voltage controlled switch. The voltage on one terminal of the transistor determines whether the other two terminals are connected or not.
