Stat 215 Assignment 7 Module: Binomial , Exercise: Drugs Objective : (not available) Problem Description : Historical information is available on two cold drugs: A and B. The probability Drug A cures a randomly selected patient is 0.40, whereas the probability for Drug B is 0.60. A physician treats 20 randomly selected patients with Drug A and 20 patients with Drug B. The conditions of the binomial distribution are assumed to hold. The following binomial Java applet displays the probabilities (initially) of a binomial random variable X A for Drug A with n = 20 and p = 0.4. Use this applet to answer the following questions concerning the number of patients cured for each of the drugs. Question Compare the population means and standard deviations of the binomial distributions for the patients taking drugs A and B. Discuss the skewness of these distributions. Answer For Drug A: E(X) = np = 20(.4) = 8 sd(X) =sqrt(npq) = sqrt(20(.4)(.6)) = sqrt(4.8) = 2.191 For Drug B: E(X) = np = 20(.6) = 12 sd(X) = sqrt(npq) =sqrt(4.8) = 2.191
