Characteristics of Expository Essays o What characteristics make these essays expository? Both these essays contain facts to support the topic. o Identify the type of organization each author used to develop the essay (topic, time order, space order, or informative process). A Soul as free as the air: In this essay the author used time order to explain the facts of how Lucy Stone contributed to both the African American and the women’s movements. Cochlear Implants: The author uses the informative process to inform the read about cochlear implants and how they differ from other types of implants. o Why do you think each author chose that type of organization for his or her essay? In A Soul as Free as the Air, I believe the author chose that particular type of format because it best helped convey all of the different things Mrs. Stone achieved in her life time. It gave the reader of a specific time not only as it related to “her” life but as it related to that moment in time (history). Where as in the Cochlear Implants essay the author was trying to convey the medical
