Stat 215 Assignment 8
Module:
Poisson
, Exercise:
Traps
Objective
: (not available)
Problem Description
: A series of 40 insect traps were set within a region of
sand dunes. The number of insects caught over a fixed time per trap for each
of two taxa were counted. The mean number of
Staphylinoidea
was 1.2,
whereas the mean number of
Hemiptera
was 2.1. Assume the insects of the
taxa are spread randomly across the dunes, and thus the Poisson distribution
is appropriate.
The following
Poisson Java applet
displays the probabilities of a Poisson
random variable, initially for
Hemiptera
. Use this applet to answer the
questions below.
Question
What is the probability that no insects, i.e., P(X = 0), are caught
in a trap for Hemiptera?
Answer
P(X = 0) = 0.1224 for Hemiptera.
Your Answer
P(X=0) = 0.1224
