Lab 3 1. Define reflex. On the chalkboard, diagram the components of a reflex arc. Are all reflexes considered unlearned responses; why or why not? What is a monosynaptic reflex? On the chalkboard, diagram the monosynaptic reflex that is seen in skeletal muscle. Diagram and explain the significance of muscle spindles in muscle reflexes (use a pain- withdrawal reflex as an example). Reflex – involuntary, stereotyped response that occurs in response to an appropriate stimulus; generally elicited by noxious stimulus, but also by light or other stimuli Reflex arc: Stimulus acts on receptor afferent limb integrator efferent limb response/contraction All reflexes are unlearned due to the nature of the integrator, which is located outside of conscious perception Monosynaptic reflex – integrator is a single neuron Muscle spindles are important for proprioception because they detect changes in length of the muscle. Without knowing where the body is, it is impossible to effectively respond to a stimulus. 2. What is the H-Reflex? Diagram the components of this reflex. What is the physiologic importance of this pathway? What is an EMG? What are the H- and M- waves? H-reflex – Hoffman reflex – electrically induced, similar to spinal reflex Components of H-reflex – stimulator, 1a afferent axon, aMN in spinal cord, muscle, EMG Stretch reflex Whole muscle passively stretched afferent nerves fibers increase rate of firing Afferent fibers synapse on aMN (efferent fiber) that innervate same muscle
