The asphalt is the binder and gives the pavement some flexibility. And the aggregate is the particulate, providing the strength. #16 1) Resistance to permanent deformation 2) Fatigue resistance 3) Thermal cracking resistance 4) Resistance to hardening 5) Resistance to moisture induce damage 6) Skid resistance 7) Workability when being placed and compacted #17 The binder content is what is going to decide many of the characteristics of the HMA. If not enough binder is used not of the aggregate will be coated and the material will be less stable and less durable. If too much binder is used the aggregate will have too much lubrication and thus you will have a less stable mix. Typical range of binder is 4% to 7% by weight #18 Strength is goo but the asphalt concrete will also need to be able to flex and absorb thermal expansions. Also skid must be minimized.
