Question 3 What are the characteristics associated with the “national (in) security state?” Based on your reading by Wesley Wark, how did these characteristics manifest themselves? -The national insecurity state has a number of specific features: 1. A record of government fears of external threats and internal conspiracies and subversion; fears often shaped by the flow of intelligence from more powerful states with whom Canada is bound in an alliance or colonial relationship. 2. A popular mentality that stresses insecurity at home, a product of an insufficiently strong or cohesive national identity. 3. The appearance of a national security force that sees itself as under pressure. A security intelligence service that is itself insecure. 4. Parsimony in which small and poorly funded security services are supposed to keep national insecurity at bay. The very lack of capacity for intelligence tends to stimulate fear and exaggerate threats. Question 4
