Geography 2051 Study of what and where –this shifts too – why are things where they are? This is description versus explanation, explaining and understanding why things are distributed the way they are is the questions of modern geography Types of Geography 1. Human Geog – About People, way they are and things they do and all of the interconnections btw them 2. Physical Grog. – Grog of the natural words, environment 4 Spheres – all inter connecting (like a ven diagram) 1. Lithosphere – solid portions of globe, mountains, plains, continents, gormorphologists 2. Atmosphere – layer of gasses that surround earth, makes living possible, climatologists, meteorologists 3. Hydrosphere – Lakes, Oceans, Rivers, Ground water, water in clouds, hydrogologists, oceanography 4. Biosphere – Living portion of the globe, dependent on other spheres , biogeography’s 5 Themes 1. Place – Characteristics and attributes that make it unique, something that makes it different than any other place of earth 2. Location – where things are, maps only way to describe a location that’s relative to another location 3. Region – Characteristics that are shared by other places in a surrounding area, cultural, physical, climatic 4. Movement – (Networks, linkages) –Power Line, Rivers, Food webs, bind together locations and form regions 5. Human earth relationships – the environment around us has influenced people, relationships, , availability of resources has caused people to move from one place to another, global warming, pollution, deforestation, we modify the earth and environment significally Methods and tools to study geography Scientific Method – a way to answer question, a way to predict new knowledge the goal of this method is to GENERATE KNOWLEDGE
