Stat 215 Assignment 14 Module: CI , Exercise: Diameters Objective : (not available) Problem Description : A machine produces cylinders which have normally distributed thicknesses with a mean of 8.1 cm and a standard deviation of 0.1 cm. The confidene interval applet below displays 90% confidence intervals on the true mean thickness computed for each of 100 batches each containing 5 cylinders. The cylinder thickness is normally distribution with µ = 8.1 cm and sigma = 0.1 cm. Question Do the lengths of the confidence intervals depend on the true mean thickness? Why or why not. Answer No. The width of the confidence interval only depends on the error term, i.e., t x s/sqrt(n), which does not depend on the mean thickness. The width, or length, is 2 x error term. Your Answer No, they depend on the St Dev and the Degree of Freedom. Mean only effects where the CIs are plotted on the graph.
