Chapter 2 key terms Enlightenment- An intellectual force in 1600 and 1700 Europe; Also called the “Age of Reason” Deism- A religious belief that there is a supreme being but that being does not play a role in every day life. Articles of confederation- The first constitution which was passed by the Continental Congress and ratified by the states in 1781. Constitutional Convention- was held in Philadelphia in 1787 to revise the Articles of Confederation. Republic- A form of government whose power is derived by the people and the officials are accountable to the people. House of Representatives- The house of Congress in which representation is based on population and members are elected by voters. Senate- The house of Congress in which the members are chosen by state legislatures Great Compromise- A compromise made by James Madison to decide the makeup of Congress. Three-fifths compromise- The compromise in which slaves were counted as 3/5 of a white person.
