CEE 3510 Problem Set No.5 Due: March 12, 2010 1. [Adapted from Water Quality by Tchobanoglous and Schroeder] 5 mL of a polluted water sample plus 1.0 mL of a bacterial seed are diluted to 300 mL for a BOD test according to the procedure described in Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. Blanks with 1.0 mL of seed diluted to 300 ml are also analyzed to permit correction for the contribution of the seed to sample BOD. Dissolved oxygen concentration in the bottles is measured at one-day intervals and the results are given below. Using these data, estimate the BOD rate constant and ultimate BOD (BOD L ) using the Thomas method (use linear regression to fit the data) or if you have access to a non-linear regression fitting routine, you may skip the Thomas Method and fit the data directly. Use the estimated BOD L and k values to calculate the BOD 5 .
