When the velocity reaches a critical velocity grains of a certain size (grain diameter) begin to move or are entrained. Grains move in several different ways: Suspension transport - the smaller grains are lifted up into the flow and kept there by the turbulent nature of the flow; so turbulence prevents the grains from returning to the sediment surface Let’s draw a picture!
