MINERALOGY OF CLASTIC ROCKS 1. Abundance of any mineral in a sedimentary rock depends on: a) 1. Lithology of the source rock – this determines what minerals or rock types are available to end up in a sedimentary rock b) Chemical and mechanical stability of a particular mineral or rock type because the mineral has to get from the source to the depositional site - for chemical stability, opposite to Bowen's reaction series - for mechanical stability depends on hardness and cleavage - Harder minerals like quartz are generally more stable than soft minerals like gypsum or calcite - Feldspar is more susceptible to chemical weathering and, although hard, has cleavage, so more susceptible to mechanical weathering than quartz c) Climate in the source area – as we have seen this determines the weathering conditions and, thus, what minerals will make it to the depositional site 2. Common constituents: a) Rock fragments - more typical of conglomerates and breccias - as rock fragments get smaller tend to break into the constituent minerals
